From a Family Winery to a Modern Estate
The story of THAYA began in 2019, when a small family winery transformed into a new vision led by enologist Jakub Smrčka and Josef Trávníček. Their shared goal was simple and ambitious: put their corner of South Moravia on the world wine map.
What drives them is not scale, but stability of quality and a long term commitment to showing their region abroad. Representing Moravia is both a joy and a responsibility, and THAYA approaches it with calm confidence and humility.
Jakub Smrčka: The Winemaker Shaped by the Forest
Jakub’s journey began at twelve, making wine with his grandfather. By fifteen he knew he wanted to devote his life to crafting wines. His defining memories carry both curiosity and courage: creating his first ambitious Sauvignon Blanc in 2015, the nerve wracking wait for THAYA’s inaugural sparkling wine, and finally the winery’s absolute victory in “Winery of the Year”.
His style is guided by the unique climate of Podyjí National Park. The vast forest mass cools the vineyards, slowing ripening and giving the wines higher acidity, phenolic maturity and a juicy, unmistakable freshness.
Terroir at the Core
Granitic bedrock: Wild, mineral, slightly reductive. Herbal and earthy rather than fruity. Deep structure and long aging potential.
Loess with calcareous clay: Expressive, fruit forward, approachable. Yellow fruit, openness and generosity.
Together, they create the duality that defines THAYA’s style: wild mineral tension and sunlit fruit richness.
Respect. Freshness. Juiciness. Purity. Terroir.
